The person behind the method
Charles Linden’s story
Before Charles Linden developed The Method, he knew what it was like to have fear decide where he could go, what he could do and how he lived. This is the personal story behind his work with TRT™ Therapy.

When fear gets in the way of the life you want
Charles’s story begins long before The Method. At school, he wanted to become a surgeon, but the panic attacks he was experiencing made that future feel out of reach. He turned towards art and won a place at Central Saint Martins. He did not take it up: a panic attack during the interview process had left him afraid to follow that opportunity.
He went on to build a career in television and corporate production. Behind the work, deadlines and responsibilities, he was also living with severe anxiety. Being able to do a job did not mean he felt well, and professional success did not remove what he was experiencing.
That is an important part of why he talks about recovery in practical terms. He remembers how frightening symptoms can be, how much of your life fear can take over, and how exhausting it is to keep looking for an explanation.
His recovery changed the direction of his life
Charles says he recovered in 1996 after understanding his difficulties through the biology of the fear response and changing what he was doing in everyday life. In his account, the change came within days. That is his personal experience, not a timetable promised to everyone who uses the program.
He began sharing his approach with a small group of people he had met through local mental health services. He describes seeing them recover as the turning point: he wanted to understand why the approach had helped, and make that understanding useful to other people.
The question was no longer only how to feel better himself. It was how to explain fear and recovery clearly enough for someone who was frightened, exhausted and unsure what to try next.
From personal experience to The Method and TRT™ Therapy
The Method grew from that work. TRT™—Threat Recalibration Therapy—is the recovery approach Charles developed around the biology of the fear response. Its focus is helping people put recovery instructions into practice, rather than presenting a book as the whole answer.
The digital program brings together video, audio, written instruction and practical resources. Complete adds advice and support from qualified recovery therapists, live sessions and a member community. Ask Chuck provides 24/7 AI guidance; it is separate from the human recovery team.
Charles also founded the Institute of Applied Psychophysiology. His wider work includes practitioner training, residential programs, workshops, workplace services, education and sport. These are different ways of delivering and teaching the approach, not extras automatically included in every home-access purchase.
What the evaluation found
A retrospective evaluation commissioned by NHS Shropshire and analysed at the University of Copenhagen included 61 program completers. Their average GAD-7 anxiety score moved from a recalled pre-program score of 18.28, in the severe range, to 2.84, in the minimal range.
Those are the reported average scores for that group. The evaluation was not a head-to-head trial against other therapies, and it does not establish a recovery timetable or guarantee an individual result. Charles’s personal recovery story and the evaluation findings are different kinds of evidence and are presented separately here.
Helping people understand became his work
Charles brought his background in communication and television into this work. He presented Stress Less with Charles Linden and has written books and programs intended to make his explanations accessible outside a clinic or lecture room.
More than 650,000 people have used The Method, and its wider history includes residential programs, workshops and personal support. The client accounts collected over more than 32 years are an important part of that story: people describing, in their own words, what changed in their lives.
For someone considering the program today, the most useful questions are practical ones: what will I learn, what will I do, who can I ask for help, and what exactly is included? You should be able to get clear answers before you decide.
What that means for you today
You do not have to take Charles’s personal story as proof that your experience will be identical. You can read client accounts, look at the program contents and ask the team about anything you do not understand before choosing an option.
Program Only provides 12 months of digital program access and Ask Chuck AI guidance, without human therapist support or live webinars. Complete includes unlimited recovery advice and support from qualified recovery therapists, weekly live group Q&A with Charles, the member community, monthly workshops and masterclasses during the first 12 months, followed by program access for life.
Private one-to-one coaching is a separate option. If that is what you are looking for, speak to the team about the sessions and fees. The live group Q&A included with Complete is not a private coaching appointment.
“What changed everything wasn't my own recovery, it was watching a handful of people I'd met through local mental health services recover the same way, in days, after years of being told there was nothing more anyone could do for them.”
